Went to see Mamma Mia! (Phyllida Lloyd, 2008). Never got a chance to see it on stage, so I can't compare, but I love the movie. This is THE feelgood movie of the decade, if not more. Forget drugs (legal or illegal) and booze, if you're feeling down, just go and see Mamma Mia! An all-women effort (writing, directing, etc.), with the stupendous Meryl Streep, the excellent Christine Baranski, the tremendous Julie Walters, the occasionally endearing Colin Firth, the delightful Amanda Seyfried, the charming Dominic Cooper and the boring Pierce Brosnan. Great Abba songs (ah, my long gone youth). Amazing singing by dancing queen Meryl Streep (on top form). Teeming with tongue-in-cheek references to pop culture (from the 1960s to the 1980s -- though the non disco vintage clothing is just ludicrous) and cleverly recycling all the elements of Ancient Greece's theater. Superb scenery and gorgeous colors. Can't wait to see it again. Have to write an article about this.
